Drone Response Team

About the Drone Response Team (DRT)

  • Our drone pilots are students who have studied and earned their FAA Remote Pilot license
  • Pilots demonstrate their skills in a variety of training scenarios under numerous types of weather conditions
  • Each pilot logs their flight hours for future employment opportunities
  • The team leader briefs all pilots prior to their flight on the airspace they will be flying in and monitors locator frequencies to ensure the team is flying within FAA guidelines and away from other aircraft
  • Not all students who become pilots will become members of the DRT as it is highly competitive and professional
  • The DRT is able to respond to emergencies year round

About Drones

Public safety drones have unfairly been labeled as a major privacy concern for citizens largely due to their perceived and classified uses within the military. The fact is that drone technology is more similar to helicopter support except at a fraction of the cost and safety concerns. The uses for drone technology in public safety are much more numerous than just law enforcement surveillance. Drone technology can find missing children, help firefighters locate fire, and even assess damage after a natural disaster. Like all surveillance, if a drone is to be used for a police investigation, law enforcement must first obtain a search warrant or the information obtained cannot be used; similar to using a helicopter.
