Reports began surfacing in December 2019 that a new type of coronavirus had begun killing people in China. The illness caused by the virus was named “COVID-19.” It is believed that the virus initially was transmitted from some type of animal in a large seafood and live animal marketplace. On 1/30/2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency and on 1/31/2020 the Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency for the United States. Travel bans were implemented and over a dozen quarantine hospitals were set up all around the United States. The Vinal EOC, at the request of the CT-1 DMAT Team, began producing a weekly situation report on 2/13/2020 and continued until 5/15/2020. These reports ended up being shared among tens of thousands of people including members of the National Disaster Medical System. Mr. Cruickshank was deployed with CT-1 DMAT for the outbreak on 3/6/2020 and the Vinal EOC was officially activated for the first time. In what ended up being a 23-day activation, the Vinal EOC provided mission support to deployed teams in addition to producing their weekly reports. School was closed mid-activation due to the pandemic on 3/13/2020 and remained closed for the rest of the school year. A large number of students went above and beyond in continuing their mission despite school being closed in order to support those deployed.
