The Vinal Tech Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is one of the first of its kind in the high school setting nationwide. When disasters strike, numerous agencies, responders, volunteers, and community organizations respond to help with rescue and recovery operations. The Vinal EOC assists assets in the field with critical operations support from our facility in Middletown, CT. With extensive Federal Emergency Management training, a state-of-the-art operations center, and field-experienced guidance, students run these disasters in real-time and provide material support to deployed Federal agencies. Junior and senior CJPS students run the operations center while freshman and sophomore students shadow and train for these roles. The EOC teaches students leadership, responsibility, problem-solving, and professionalism in a setting that they take very seriously as human lives are at stake. Something as simple as failing to provide warning of a passing thunderstorm can dramatically affect assets that may be treating patients in outdoor field hospitals and the students don't take this responsibility lightly. In this new age, internet resources and news outlets are often updated long before information is transmitted to the field which can cause dramatic shortages of current information. The Vinal EOC combines the field experience of area experts with the technological expertise of Vinal students to monitor these resources, connects the dots, and compile critical updates for field personnel.
