Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

Your Emergency Medical Technician Course!

Introduction
The Emergency Medical Technician course will prepare you for State and National licensure as an EMT-Basic. You can take this certification almost anywhere in the Country and get a good job helping people in many medical settings. It is unlike any course you have taken yet in high school and will require you to study and practice if you want to pass. Outside of this program, this course averages $3,500 - $5,000 to take. Being an EMT will help you in any career and also in your personal life. Ask questions, form study groups, and achieve something that will benefit you for life!

Course Expectations
There are two paths for this course; those taking the license exam and those choosing not to. The grading and requirements are as follows:
Taking the license exam
  • Complete the entire course
    • Missed lessons must be made up
    • Must have a quiz (written and practical) average of 75% or higher in order to receive instructor approval signature
    • PowerSchool grading will match those not taking the license exam so those who are trying hard are rewarded
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours in a clinical setting with minimum of 10 patient contacts
  • Take the 5-station practical exam
  • Take the written exam
Not Taking the license exam
  • Complete the entire course
    • Missed lessons must be made up
    • Quizzes are scored as pass or fail.
      • >60 = Pass
      • <60 = Fail
Personal Behavior Disclaimer:
This course is a hands-on course. You will need to touch your classmates in order to properly learn and demonstrate the skills. INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING OR BEHAVIOR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and will result in immediate escalation to school administrative discipline. Professionalism is a requirement when treating medical patients.

  • Module 5 - Shock and Resuscitation (Ch. 15-17)
  • Module 6 - Pharmacology, Medical Emergencies (Ch. 14, 18-25)
  • Module 7 - Trauma (Ch. 27-36)
  • Module 8 - Special Patient Populations (Ch. 26, 37-41)
  • Module 9 - EMS OPS (Ch. 42-46)
  • Module 10 - Connecticut Specific Skills
Forms and Links
What YOU need to do:
  1. Obtain the course OEMS approval number and estimated course completion date from your instructor
  2. Create an account on www.elicense.ct.gov if you intend to get your license. This will give you certification to practice emergency medicine in CT.
  3. Complete TWO CYCLES of the course
  4. Create an EMT application in your eLicense account. Have a photo of your face ready (A selfie is OK).
  5. Create an account at www.NREMT.org for National certification.
  6. COMPLETE THE COURSE. You must maintain a 75 course average in order to pass the course and obtain instructor approval.
  7. Submit a Parental Consent Form
  8. Complete the Psychomotor Exam (Practical exam) - 5 Stations
    1. Unlimited attempts
    2. Price varies, Typically $100.
    3. Results sent to instructor
  9. Complete the cognitive exam (Written exam) - Computer based
    1. After completing your NREMT application and being marked as successfully completing the course by your instructor
    2. $98 per attempt
    3. Visit www.PearsonVue.com/nremt to schedule your test
    4. You get three attempts at this exam
    5. The results will be emailed to you
