On April 11, 2019, students from Vinal Tech's Criminal Justice and Protective Services program participated in the 2019 West Hartford Unified Command Training Drill. The training was an invaluable opportunity for hundreds of first responders to train together using CJPS students as simulated victims of a major catastrophe. Students arrived and were extensively briefed on safety procedures for the day before having realistic make-up and injuries applied by a Hollywood makeup artist. Training coordinators then coached students on how they should act during the scenarios and the day-long training evolutions began. The drills involved police, fire, EMS, and 911 dispatch as well as specialized units from SWAT, Capitol Region Emergency Services, local hospitals, and many more. Students were able to meet and talk with responders throughout the day and were exposed to dozens of careers available to them within the trade. Training coordinators took the time to introduce the students to selected individuals throughout the day as well as provide unique experiences for them in between trainings. Students were able to shadow several different career paths and rotate through various positions throughout the day. The event was overwhelmingly successful and the West Hartford Police Department praised Vinal CJPS students for their professionalism, responsibility, and valuable feedback noting that the event would not have been as successful had it not been for their help.
